A population without predators

Britain is home to more wild deer than at any point since the last ice age. Government estimates put the national population at around two million today, up from roughly 450,000 in the 1970s. Six species now roam the country: red and roe deer, both native, and fallow, sika, muntjac, and Chinese water deer, all introduced at various points in history. Fallow deer were first brought to Britain by the Romans and later established more widely under Norman land management in the eleventh century; sika and muntjac arrived from east Asia via estate releases in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

What unites all six species today is the absence of anything that hunts them. Wolves, lynx, and bears — the animals that once regulated deer numbers across Britain — have been gone for centuries. Combined with milder winters and expanding woodland cover, conditions for deer population growth are currently close to ideal.

What happens when numbers get too high

Deer are browsers, feeding on the shoots, bark, and leaves of woody plants. At high densities they can strip a woodland's understorey — the layer of shrubs, wildflowers, and regenerating young trees — to the point where natural recovery becomes almost impossible. Research by the British Trust for Ornithology has found that common species including robin, wren, and blackbird become less abundant in heavily browsed woodland where structural complexity has been lost. The government has noted that a third of English woodlands are now in poor condition partly as a result of excessive deer browsing. 

Deer are not harmful in themselves. At appropriate densities they play a genuine ecological role, maintaining open glades and contributing to woodland diversity. The problem is one of balance: when populations exceed what the land can sustain, the consequences for biodiversity, woodland regeneration, and carbon sequestration can be significant and long-lasting.

The role of culling

In the absence of natural predators, human management is currently the only practical means of controlling deer numbers at scale. Licensed deer stalkers carry out selective, humane culling according to agreed management plans, targeting animals in ways designed to maintain a healthy population structure. Where sustained management has been applied, research shows measurable recovery: ground flora returns, tree regeneration resumes, and invertebrate and bird diversity increases.

Venison as a by-product of management

Wild venison is the direct product of this process. Every carcass represents an animal culled as part of ecological land management — not farmed, not fed on supplementary grain, not housed or routinely medicated. Wild deer live entirely on naturally available vegetation, which means the environmental footprint of producing wild venison is substantially different from most conventional livestock. There are no feed crops, no synthetic fertilisers, and no routine antibiotic use in the supply chain, making it one of the healthiest and most sustainable choices.
